Why this rollout matters
The Bronx has long been home to some of our deepest partnerships with NYC public schools. This semester, Tech in Schools Initiative (TSI) is expanding access to AI Tutor and PIXIO — two classroom-ready platforms we built in-house — so more students can experiment with AI where they already learn: inside real schedules, with real teachers, and with guardrails designed for K-12.
AI Tutor — questions, explanations, and pacing that fit a period
AI Tutor is an adaptive assistant built for students who need a second explanation, a nudge on homework, or a calmer way to review before an assessment. Unlike generic chat tools dropped into a browser, AI Tutor is moderated for school use, tuned for age-appropriate responses, and deployed in a stack our team operates alongside the rest of the TSI app directory.
In Bronx cohorts, instructors are using AI Tutor to:
- Reinforce concepts after direct instruction, without splitting the class into ten different tabs
- Give students a low-stakes place to ask “why” before they raise their hand
- Support differentiation — advanced learners can go deeper while others rebuild foundations
We are not replacing teachers. We are giving them another lever in a room that already moves fast.
PIXIO — creativity with filters that belong in a school
PIXIO brings text-to-image generation into projects where visuals matter: storyboards, concept art for games, science diagrams, and design thinking sprints. It is content-filtered from day one, aligned to how districts expect creative software to behave on student devices.
Bronx classrooms are using PIXIO to:
- Pair writing and visual storytelling in ELA and CS pathways
- Prototype UI and world-building in game-development units
- Make abstract STEM ideas tangible — “show me what that ecosystem could look like” — without leaving the lesson plan
When students can iterate quickly on images inside a supervised workflow, teachers spend less time policing random tools and more time coaching craft.
Implementation — not a pilot in a vacuum
Rolling out AI Tutor and PIXIO is not only a product decision; it is an operations decision. TSI coordinates with school staff on:
- Account access and rostering that matches how each building already runs TSI programs
- Professional development touchpoints so teams know what “good use” looks like in their subject areas
- Clear escalation paths when a school has questions about privacy, moderation, or classroom norms
We have learned from years in NYC that the best technology is the kind schools can repeat semester after semester — not a one-off demo.
Looking ahead
AI Tutor and PIXIO join a growing set of Built by TSI tools alongside platforms like Machine and the broader AI & machine learning track. If you lead a Bronx school or program and want to align your next cohort with this stack, start with Request TSI or reach out at support@mytsi.org.
Tech in Schools Initiative remains committed to putting industry-grade tools in the classrooms that need them most — with the structure, training, and trust that public education deserves.
